The Highly Skilled Migrant Programme
The Visa for Professionals who want to work in the UK

This is a very brief introduction to the Highly Skilled Migrant Programme (HSMP) that has been initiated to enable highly skilled professionals to work in the United Kingdom.

For full details of the scheme, and the forms for completion, visit the UK Border & Immigration Agency website at: www.bia.homeoffice.gov.uk/workingintheuk/hsmp/.

Applications are awarded on a points system, based on education, skills, experience, age and past earnings. In order to be accepted onto the HSMP you need to pass a points based skills assessment and also demonstrate your English language skills.

Initial applications to the HSMP involve a two stage process. The first stage of the application is to pass the points-based and English language assessments; this is called the HSMP Application. The second stage is to apply for permission to enter (entry clearance) in the UK as a highly skilled migrant. You will need to pay a (non refundable) fee when you make your application. If you are granted entry clearance you will be able to live and work in the United Kingdom for 2 years, and if you wish to stay longer, you will need to apply to extend your stay.

There is a fee to be paid at the time you make your HMS Application, currently listed in the web site as £400, and a further fee for the second stage of your application, Entry Clearance. The second fee is decided locally by the diplomatic post where you make the application.

The web site states that the majority of applications are being processed within 14 weeks, but taking all the activities of your personal preparation, the Application Process and Entry Clearance, the whole process will probably take six months. Remember you will need a valid passport.

The skills assessment requires you to reach a score at least 75 points based on academics and qualifications, previous earnings, previous UK experience, and age, plus you need to meet the English language skills requirement.

The web site is very detailed, giving you all the information you should need to make your application, but if you do experience any difficulty, please do not hesitate to call IACCM Resourcing and we will endeavour to assist you.
